Website design services has been pretty much a dumbed-down version of what it used to be. That is thanks to website-builders and things that allow you to create a website by just doing a couple of clicks.
Although there is nothing wrong with that per se, actually thinking about web design as simple as that is just, well, flawed. You see, web design principles encompass the aesthetics and there is more to it than you think.
In this article, I will talk about some principles of web design that are key to today’s standards.
Ever wondered why we always seem to look at content in a particular way? You’re probably familiar with the “F-Pattern” since we usually read content in such a way that it represents that capital letter F.
Well, you might not be aware of this, but aside from the F-Pattern, we are actually using the Grid system when outlining our content as well.
Basically, the grid system is just a collection of ways we lay out content for our readers to see. It could be the use of rows and columns and I would have to add that it depends on the web designer how they would best implement this.
The grid system basically makes it a point that all content that people consume will be read in a more legible and easier manner.
The good thing is that we are already adopting this, but it is still important to point out as this has become a lost art.
If you look at the most popular websites, you can probably tell that they have some elements that are placed in the same order. For instance, you might find the site logo at the upper left corner of the screen. You can probably see a “Sign In” button at the top right and it might be accompanied by some site navigation menus as well.
The thing is we are already following such visual hierarchy because, for most of us, we are already accustomed to certain things being there. However, new web designers still actually forget this and this is much to their detriment.
People would look for certain features only in specific areas and although it is okay to experiment with different designs, it would be best to stick to what works. After all, why fix it if it isn’t broken, right?
The Right Fonts
The typography that you will use on your website is also crucial as well. It is important that there is now a shift towards actually making letters as part of your overall aesthetics like using more Serif fonts to make amazing designs.
However, if you are creating content like an article, for example, it would still be best that you use what is known as the “web-safe fonts”. These are just fonts that make sure that your content remains legible. So, whether you’re going to use fonts as part of your design or simply just for the article, it would be best that you do your research as to what is best used in certain situations.
Color and Imagery
Lastly, and most definitely not the least, is the use of colors and imagery. You pretty much have the freedom to use whatever colors you want to use, so long as it is something that is pleasing to the eyes.
As much as possible, do not go beyond more than 3 colors since it can overwhelm the eyes of the beholder. Furthermore, images should be optimized and they should be of high-quality as well. Also, it has to be relevant to the tone and the message that you want to convey.
